As you probably know, mold was here before we were. Mold and fungi, as one of the oldest genus in the world, grow in nearly every climate in a variety of different spores.
It is possible to create environments and conditions that have extremely low or zero mold counts, but the conditions required to create these clean environments are not feasible for the average consumer.
The EPA's guidelines specifies that mold remediators should achieve lower mold counts in the air inside a home than what is naturally outside. For this reason, that is why My Mold Masters will take a outside air sample. This gives us a baseline, an ambient mold temperature, to shoot for during remediation.
The traditional remediation methods takes days upon days and involves demolition of the contaminated area, constant noisy fans, air scrubbers & dehumidifiers, application of a harsh chemical called biocide, scrubbing stud, and then reconstruction. During this process mold can be spread throughout the home, and continue to grow. That is why it is important to not only treat the area where a mold bloom happened, and treat the whole home including the air handler. The lining of a plenum is a prime breeding ground for mold, and it quickly spreads mold spores throughout your whole home.
The treatment that we use makes it easy for us to remediate mold in a space quickly, affordably, and with little to no demo. The easiest way to describe our treatment is to call it fogging. We are able to microatomize our green, EPA/FDA approved chemical so it can penetrate most building materials and cavities inside a home without demolition. Fogging will actually break down the proteins of the mold itself, turning it into inert matter or dust.
Our treatment is proven time and time again by our post fogging air quality testing. We pride ourselves by getting our results below the ambient mold levels in your neighborhood. Even after treatment the fog continues to kill mold, so the longer it cooks the more results you see.
All this said, there are some conditions in which old-style methods of material tear out and removal are required, and it’s important to consult with a licensed mold remediator.
So, no, you can’t completely eliminate mold from common spaces. You will continue to bring mold inside your home every time outside air comes in, kids and pets run in and out the door, or you don't take your shoes off when you come in from the yard. However, you can lower your home's spore count by correctly cleaning mold when you see, keeping your temperature 75º or lower, and the humidity less than 60%.
